Doggerland
|
Doggerland is the name of a place that no longer exists — it was an area between England and France inundated after the last glacial maximum, but previously inhabited by mesolithic people. Given my bent for the historical and geographical, it's naturally the sort of topic that pops up in the my YouTube feed.
Not unlike anything that indicated Doggerland's existence, I consider this song to be a bit of an artifact — one that barely hints at a lost relationship. |
The Selkie Song
|
For the Selkie Song, I find myself once again turning to mythology as a source of inspiration — in this case the Selkie of Irish folklore (whom I recall Nina Jo Smith writing a song about for a song writing circle she and I participated in). Equally of interest to me was the common cultural notion of animals who disguise themselves as humans or are in some sort of alternate form — and then gets married to a human.
I decided to think of the song from the point of view of the person who marries such a creature and what the aftermath of that relationship might be like for them, especially as they look to move on. |
Under a Sky of Bronze
|
The inspiration for this song was a list of "Homeric Epithets" as well as Deuteronomy 28, referred by the wags of the "Blasphemer's Bible" webcast as the "most metal" chapter of the Bible (plus a little nod to Catullus for good measure).
That all got mashed up into a narrative about exile and coming to terms with such an exile. |
